Kitchen Remodel… Before and After

03 Aug

I am participating in the Hooked on Houses House Tours Blog party.  Head on over there after you view this post for amazing house tours – they’re all just breathtaking.

I am showcasing the amazing (in my mind) transformation of a 50-year old kitchen.  It’s a bit old-fashioned with modern touches.  But then again, we have a 50-year old house.  Enjoy!

I thought posting the bare after pictures with it will help us appreciate the difference much more so here they are.   Forgive the “yellowness” of these pictures.  It’s the camera’s fault!  I have a better quality semi-finished set of after pictures of my dream kitchen in a previous post.

Just note that this was a 50-year old kitchen and we had to tear down all the walls and ceiling.  It was plaster and you know how bad that could go.  Demolition took a week and a half.  Oi!

Do you see how the drawers and cabinet doors don’t close?  Well, it was worse inside.  The lower drawers were never used by us – and the dishwasher was filled with plastic bags.  I guess the previous owners used it to hold stuff and not dishes.

We replaced the refrigerator just 2 years ago so we are keeping that for now.  The floors had 3 layers of plywood and 4 linoleum (vinyl) sheets in between.

What?  Tiles on the walls?  Ummm…. yes!

On the right side of the bottom picture are wood panellings.  It’s really in good shape and I think we kept some of it but it’s really not my taste for this kitchen.

Do you see now how it was?  😉   But yup!  we used it for 3 years.  It was alright, just not comfortable.

And now, the bare after pictures…

We replaced the windows when we first moved in so that wasn’t touched.  Do you see the tag on the window?  Yes, it’s been there for 3 years.  We never removed it.

Notice the island legs.  That’s my pride and joy.  Rather than spending $2040 FOR 3 if we order them from the manufacturer, we bought materials and stain and polyurethane – all for under $300!  Similarly, we didn’t order the moldings from them.  Instead of paying $1200, we spent less than $100 for the top and bottom wall cabinet moldings.  That’s huge savings!  And we love them.

At this time, the kitchen hood still had it’s plastic cover that’s why it is white.  We used two colors of granite for the countertop,  Santa Cecilia and Black Galaxy.  It’s perfect!  The backsplash wasn’t expensive but the glass tiles in between the plain marble tiles and the upper portion was a bit.  It matches the square glass tiles scattered by the stove.

So here they are, with under-cabinet lighting and all.  IT’S ALL WORTH IT!

I love every bit of it.  It is much more meaningful since we were the ones who picked everything.  We were scared and concerned that our choices wouldn’t come out well together.  In the end, I think it did.  What do you think?

Oh my gosh, now that is VISION! Great job.

Thanks, Darla. I must say, I couldn’t really see it in my head then. There’s so many options out there. One can really get overboard with the patterns and styles.

Thanks for the complement… It took 2 months of nerves. But in the end, it was worth all the dust and eating out and the never ending waiting.

It’s gorgeous and I love how your island legs turned out, they are wonderful!

The colors are great, very warm and I love the lighting, something my kitchen is definitely lacking.

Thanks for the kitchen tour, I hope you will stop by my blog and see my open house, too.

    Bella 🙂

Thanks, Bella. I love the porch on your open house. It gives a very welcoming feel to it. I love the rooms as well, and the lively kitchen. This is so much fun.

Beautiful transformation! Remodeling is a lot of work but so worth it. You did a great job. Thanks for sharing.

A lot of work indeed! I can’t wait until we can redo the bathrooms. But… that will have to wait a bit. There’s so many things that need attention first.

You have such a lovely kitchen and you sure did get lots of BANG for the buck! It was so nice to see the before and after pics!

Thanks, Debbie. I am most happy because I know that we didn’t overspend. It was a lot but we had to strip it down to the skeleton so I think we did good budget-wise.

I love it! Especially your backsplash. You did a great job!

Donna, I can never express how afraid I was with the backsplash. The countertop (Santa Cecilia) is busy. I couldn’t decide what to do with the backsplash such that it wouldn’t compete with it but I don’t want it to be too plain either. After 2 hours of looking around, I saw the plain marble tiles. And then a light bulb moment! Break the pattern! And it just came together. I wasn’t home when they were installing it so you can just imagine how concerned I was at work. I think I didn’t work too much that day. lol! Thanks for visiting.

Wonderful makeover. I really like the island and the lamp. Great job!

Thank you… I love it too. We bought the lamp 2 years ago for the dining room but we decided to keep the chandelier that’s already there. And I was actually looking for a 3-light island light. I can’t see anything that I wanted so we tried this one. I think it works. We can always replace it when we get tired of it. So far, I like it there.

Wow, my kitchen looks like your before:( Love what you did, really is well planned out and I love the discounted island. Bet it looks better if you spent all that extra money.

Thank you. I had fun doing it. The island legs from the manufacturer were actually more plain. It doesn’t show it here but the ones we got have leaf carvings towards the bottom. If I had extra money, I could’ve gone overboard – but I am happy we put our personal touches in it. It made it more special.

Beautiful! Do you just stand there looking around in disbelief? I think you made a lot of wonderful choices! Congrats!

Thanks for sharing this on the tour.

Do I just stand there staring? That’s an understatement. lol. I spend too much time in the kitchen now. I actually told my husband he can have the bedroom while I sleep in the kitchen. haha! But sometimes, I have yet to remind myself that this is real.

wowwee! that’s gorgeous. i could cook/bake all sorts of things in a kitchen like that!

Exactly, Maya! I cook more now. I think my husband was aiming for that. Now he complains when I cook… he ends up eating too much.

I just kept staring at your kitchen’s before photos. I swear to you that two years ago when we were looking for a place to buy I saw a kitchen JUST LIKE THAT. The left hand side opened into a different room but that wall with the cabinets and sink — they are twins. As I told the realtor when she asked if we were interested in buying the house — my heart says yes but my head says no. I just was not up to that much demolition and remodeling. My hat is off to you.
    Rita

My kitchen has a twin???? I would love to see that! I thought it was the only one of its kind. That’s what happened to us with this house. One step inside and we felt that we were home. I didn’t really care about how the kitchen looked like until I was trying to clean it up.

What a transformation…WOW. I agree with Rita, although I have done and witnessed many renovations just thinking about how much work and burden it would be to remodel the kitchen is a bit scary. You have done an excellent work. My hat also off to you 🙂

Thanks! OMG! I can’t believe this response has been here for a month! Sorry! I’ll activate this again… It helps me chill a little bit… We still love it!
